Lake Atitlan is 13km wide and 23km
long (8 x 14 miles) and 320m deep at its deepest (over 1000ft).
It's formed from the crater of a huge extinct volcano, and is surrounded
by smaller though no less awesome mountains and volcanoes. A handful
of towns and villages and coffee plantations cling to the sides
of the mountains on the shores of the lake.
My friend Anna visited one of the
towns, San Pedro, a few years ago, and she hasn't left yet. I went to see her
with Sophie, who I'd met under a tarpaulin up another volcano during a hailstorm
and we travelled from Xela to Panajachel, the biggest town on the
shores of Atitlan, got a boat across the lake to San Pedro itself,
and spent four days with Anna exploring San Pedro, Panajachel and the Lake.
